INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to IndonesianPod101.com. This is Upper Beginner Season 1 Lesson 17 - Everybody Makes Mistakes in Indonesia. I’m Becky.
Fira: Halo. I'm Fira.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to point out someone's mistake or error in a polite way. The conversation takes place in the classroom.
Fira: It's between Adi and his teacher.
Becky: The speakers are a student and a teacher, so they’ll be speaking formal Indonesian. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Adi: Maaf, bu. Boleh saya bertanya apa jawaban untuk nomor 8 dan 9?
Guru: Untuk nomor 8 jawabannya A, untuk nomor 9 jawabannya C.
Adi: Kalau begitu, sepertinya ada kesalahan. Jawaban saya seharusnya benar tapi disalahkan.
Guru: Coba ibu lihat. (Setelah beberapa detik) Iya benar, jadi seharusnya nilai kamu 100.
Adi: Terima kasih, bu.
Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Adi: Maaf, bu. Boleh saya bertanya apa jawaban untuk nomor 8 dan 9?
Guru: Untuk nomor 8 jawabannya A, untuk nomor 9 jawabannya C.
Adi: Kalau begitu, sepertinya ada kesalahan. Jawaban saya seharusnya benar tapi disalahkan.
Guru: Coba ibu lihat. (Setelah beberapa detik) Iya benar, jadi seharusnya nilai kamu 100.
Adi: Terima kasih, bu.
Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Adi: Sorry, ma'am. Could I ask, what are the answers for numbers eight and nine?
Teacher: For number eight the answer is A, for number nine the answer is C.
Adi: In that case, it seems like there’s a mistake. My answers are supposedly correct, but are marked as wrong.
Teacher: Let me see. (After a few seconds) Yes, you’re right, so your score should be 100.
Adi. Thank you, ma'am.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Fira: Becky, do you know what the school system is like in Indonesia?
Becky: Well I know, formal education lasts 12 years, with 6 years of compulsory primary school, 3 years of junior high school, and 3 years of high school, right?
Fira: That’s right. And there’s another type of system for Islamic schools too, called madrasah which also uses a 12-year educational process.
Becky: I see. As far as academic subjects go, Indonesian students can choose to study the subjects they’re most interested in, right?
Fira: That’s right. They can choose Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Languages. In Islamic schools there’s an extra subject as well - Religion.
Becky: Good to know. Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. In this lesson, we have..
Fira: sepertinya
Becky: meaning "to seem” or “to appear."
Fira: sepertinya is made up of the preposition seperti, meaning “like” and the suffix -nya.
Becky: Altogether they form a word meaning “it seems like…”You can use this word to express your feelings or your opinion, especially when you’re not sure whether what you’re thinking is correct or not. But this can be used only in formal situations, right?
Fira; Yes, for informal situations, especially in colloquial Indonesian, we say kayaknya. Kayak has the same meaning as seperti, which is “like,” and we add the same suffix -nya. kayaknya.
Becky: It means “it seems like…” Fira, can you give us an example using this word?
Fira: Sure. For example, you can say.. Sepertinya dia bohong
Becky: ..which means “It seems like he is lying.” How can we say the same thing informally?
Fira: Kayaknya dia bohong, with kayaknya instead of sepertinya.
Becky: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson you’ll learn how to point out someone's mistake or error in a polite way. There may be times when someone makes an error, so it’s good to know how to politely bring attention to the mistake.
Fira: In this case you can use the expression Sepertinya ada kesalahan.
Becky: ...which means “It seems like there’s a mistake.” Fira, let’s break this expression down and look at the meaning of each word.
Fira: Sure. First we have Sepertinya, which means “it seems…” then ada, meaning “there is.” Then finally we have kesalahan, meaning “mistake.” Sepertinya ada kesalahan.
Becky: “It seems there’s a mistake.” You can use this phrase when you’re pointing out a mistake. Listeners, please pay attention to your tone when you’re saying this phrase.
Fira: Right. It shouldn’t be high pitched, and should be slower than your usual speech. For example, Sepertinya ada kesalahan.
Becky: Okay. This phrase can also be placed inside a sentence. For example.. .
Fira: Sepertinya ada kesalahan dengan resep ini.
Becky: “It seems like there is a mistake with this recipe.”
Fira: In this sentence, I added dengan resep ini which means “in this recipe.” Like in English, I added the extra information to point out where there is a mistake. Dengan means “with,” resep means “recipe,” and ini means “this.”
Becky: You can replace "recipe" with other objects to bring attention to other kinds of mistakes. And we can use another word to point out a mistake politely.
Fira: Right. You can use seharusnya.
Becky: meaning “should be” or “supposedly.” After you say there’s a mistake, you can make a sentence using this word to let the person you are speaking to know how it should be.
Fira: If you're at a restaurant and the waiter took your order incorrectly, you can say Sepertinya ada kesalahan
Becky: “There seems to be a mistake.”
Fira: Then say Ini seharusnya “This should be..” then the food name to say “It should be something else.” Sepertinya ada kesalahan. Ini seharusnya… and the name of the item you ordered.
Becky: And for another example, let’s say you’ve finished shopping and realized that you’ve been charged 30 thousand rupiahs for one kilo of apples instead of 15 thousand. What can we say after saying “there is a mistake”?
Fira: You can say Ini seharusnya Rp 15.000,00.
Becky: That means “This should be 15,000 rupiahs.”
Fira: This is a very polite way of pointing out a mistake, so you can use it in any formal situation.

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Fira: Sampai jumpa lagi.
