Jessi: Top 25 Indonesian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 4: What do you do in Indonesian? In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Indonesian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What do you do?" In Indonesian this is
Fira: Apakah pekerjaan anda?
The first word in the question โ€œWhat do you do?โ€ is
Fira: apakah
Jessi: "meaning something like what" in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Fira: (Slow, by syllable) apakah
Jessi: Listen again at natural speed. Please repeat.
Fira: apakah
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the English translation, breaking it down by syllable, and then giving it once more at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question, What do you do? is
Fira: pekerjaan
Jessi: meaning occupation in English.
Fira: (Slow, by syllable) pekerjaan
Jessi: Now repeat.
Fira: pekerjaan
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Fira: apakah pekerjaan
{pause}
And next
Fira: anda
Jessi: meaning you in English.
Fira: (Slow, by syllable) anda
Jessi: Now repeat.
Fira: anda
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Fira: apakah pekerjaan anda
{pause}
Jessi: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question What do you do??
Fira: Saya seorang guru.
Jessi: "I'm a teacher.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Fira: Sopir
Jessi: Driver
Fira: (slow) Sopir (regular) Sopir
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Driver
Fira: Saya seorang Sopir.

Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace Driver with Doctor.
Fira: Dokter
Jessi: Doctor
Fira: (slow) Dokter (regular) Dokter
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with Doctor

Hi Marta,

Thank you for your comment ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, we use "ibu rumah tangga" to describe that situation. "ibu rumah tangga" is the English equivalent of "housewife" or "homemaker".

I hope this helps! Please feel free to browse our other lessons. You can ask questions and leave comments there as well ๐Ÿ™‚

Sampai nanti!

Sarah

Hai Andy dari Belanda, terima kasih ya untuk komentarnya...

Did you mean โ€œSaya seorang pemasar.โ€ atau โ€œSaya bekerja di bagian pemasaran.โ€?

The word โ€œpemasarโ€ meaning marketer is the correct Indonesian term but many people also like to use the English term, so it becomes โ€œSaya bekerja di (bagian) marketing.โ€ You can omit โ€œbagianโ€.

Hope this helps!

Sarah

Hi PA!

Thank you for asking! :)

As a question word, they are the same. But "apakah" is more formal, so we rarely use it in daily conversation.

Yes, "seorang" is the short form of "satu orang" (one person). It is like the english indefinite article "a/an", but specifically for person.

Let us know if you have more question.

cheers,

Dipta

Hi,

What's the different between Apa and Apakah?

and does Seorang only refers to person?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Hi Amin!

Yes, that is fine!

However, if this question is being asked in a formal situation, or a situation where you meet someone for the first time, using 'Anda kerja di mana?' is more appropriate.

Hope that helps!

Let us know if you have more question.

Cheers,

Dipta
