Indonesian Survival Phrases Lesson 34. How do you read this?
In today’s lesson we'll introduce you to a phrase that will provide you with the tools to learn from the people around. Now, a dictionary is a great idea, but don't forget that you can use Indonesian to learn in a more fun and interactive way.
And besides, Indonesian has a lot of acronyms, and what you'll need to know about these is probably not going to be covered in your dictionary. So, for this lesson we're going to need a well-known acronym, as we're going to cover "What does some acronym mean?"
For this lesson, let's use PKB or the "Pesta Kesenian Bali," the annual island-wide Bali Arts Festval.
In Indonesian "What does PKB mean?" is Apa maksudnya singkatan PKB?. Now let’s break it down by syllable A-pa mak-sud-nya sing-kat-an PKB? Now let’s hear it once again Apa maksudnya singkatan PKB? The first word apa means "what." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time. A-pa. Apa. This is followed by maksudnya, which in Indonesian is "the meaning." Maksudnya. Mak-sud-nya. Maksudnya. So to recap here, we have apa maksudnya. Literally this means "Does it mean?"
Let's take a look at the next word singkatan which means "acronym." sing-kat-an. singkatan. Finally we have PKB which is our acronym for the Pesta Kesenian Bali, the Bali Arts Festival. PKB. So altogether we have Apa maksudnya singkatan PKB? Literally this means "What does the acronym PKB mean?."
You can also use this expression without using any specific acronym. To accomplish this you can use the expression Apa maksudnya singkatan ini? This means “What does this acronym means?” Let’s break it down by syllable A-pa mak-sud-nya sing-kat-an i-ni? Now let’s hear it once again Apa maksudnya singkatan ini? We've already gone over the first three words of this phrase. The first word apa means "what." Apa. This is followed by maksudnya, which means" the meaning." maksudnya. So to recap here, we have apa maksudnya. Literally this means "What does it mean?" The next word is singkatan which means "acronym." Singkatan. Finally we have ini which means "this." I-ni. ini. So altogether we have Apa maksudnya singkatan ini?. Literally this means "What does this acronym mean?."
To ask how to say 'What does that acronym mean" Simply substitute the word "that" itu for "this" ini. This gives you Apa maksudnya singkatan itu?
As a writer in long time residence of Bali, Indonesia once row. Indonesia’s undisputed acronym capital of the world. And this is no joke. Acronym or singkatan are all over the place from news programs to shop signs. Most of these acronyms names agencies departments but there are other types. A very popular one is HUT which stands for Hari Ulang Tahun otherwise known as a birthday or anniversary. There is no way around these in Indonesia. So it is to your advantage to use a phrases in this lesson as a bridge into essential but often neglected part of the Indonesian language the singkatan.
Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying the Indonesian phrase out loud or in Indonesian, dengan keras. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so selamat sukses, that means "good luck!" in Indonesian.
All right so here we go!
“What is the acronym PKB means?” (Apa maksudnya singkatan PKB? A-pa mak-sud-nya sing-kat-an PKB? Apa maksudnya singkatan PKB?)
“What is this acronym means?” (Apa maksudnya singkatan ini? A-pa mak-sud-nya sing-kat-an i-ni? Apa maksudnya singkatan ini?)
“What is that acronym means?” (Apa maksudnya singkatan itu? A-pa mak-sud-nya sing-kat-an i-tu? Apa maksudnya singkatan itu?)
Alright, that's going to do it for today!
