Indonesian Survival Phrases Lesson 12. Smoking or Non-Smoking
Today we'll cover getting a table in the section of the restaurant you want. In Indonesia smoking in restaurants is still accepted, but there are occasions when you can ask for a non-smoking seat. Or, perhaps you would like a smoking seat. Either way let's cover that first. Now remember when you enter a restaurant you'll hear Halo, silahkan masuk. This will likely be followed by one of the following.
"Non-smoking" in Indonesian is tempat dilarang merokok. (slow) tempat dilarang merokok. Let’s break it down by syllable. tem-pat di-la-rang me-ro-kok. Now let’s hear it once again. tempat dilarang merokok.
The first word tempat means “pleace”. Let's break down this word and hear it one more time. tem-pat. tempat. The next word, dilarang means "forbidden." Let's break down this word and hear it one more time. di-la-rang. dilarang.
This is followed by merokok, which in English is "to smoke." merokok. (slow) merokok. merokok. Let’s hear the entire phrase once again. Tempat dilarang merokok. which means "the place where it is forbidden to smoke."
On the other hand, the "Smoking section" is tempat merokok. Let’s break it down by syllable. Tem-pat me-ro-kok. Now let’s hear it once again. Tempat merokok.
The first word tempat means "place." which we’ve already mentioned. tempat . This is followed by merokok, which means "to smoke." (slow) merokok. merokok.
Let’s hear the entire phrase once again. tempat merokok, which means "the place for smoking."
Now you can beat them to the punch by saying how many people are in your party and that you’d like a non-smoking seat. For example, You can also follow this with the number of people in your party. For example, if you'd like a table for three in the non-smoking section, you should say: Ada tiga orang. Boleh ke tempat dilarang merokok?
Now, second-hand smoke may not be the only obstacle on your path towards the perfect meal, as you may not like the location of the table selected for you. Perhaps you want a table by the window, or one not next to the kitchen door! In Indonesian "May we sit there?" is Boleh duduk di sana? (slow) Boleh duduk di sana? Let’s break it down by syllable. Bo-leh du-duk di sa-na? Now let’s hear it once again. Boleh duduk di sana?
The first word boleh means "may" or “be permitted to.” Let's break down this word and hear it one more time. bo-leh. boleh. This is followed by duduk, which in Indonesian is "to sit." duduk. du-duk. duduk. The last word is di sana, which means "over there." di sana. di sa-na. di sana. So altogether, we have the phrase Boleh duduk di sana?
If the table you desire is close by, "May we sit here?" is Boleh duduk di sini? (slow) Boleh duduk di sini? Boleh duduk di sini? In this case, everything stays the same except for the final word di sini, which means "here."
Non-smoking sections are still rare in restaurants in Indonesia simply because many man but not too many women still smoke proficiously. Remember that Indonesia’s the land of the clove cigarette known as the kretek. You’ll immediately notice that the distinctive smell of these cigarettes which are mass produced by factories mostly located in Java. And some cases you may even be offered a cigarette. If you don’t smoke you can either reply maaf, tidak boleh, or “Sorry I’m not allowed to.” Or Maaf tidak bisa, “Sorry, I’m not able to,”
Okay to close out today’s lesson we’d like for you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for saying the Indonesian phrase out loud or in Indonesian, dengan keras. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer so selamat sukses, that means "good luck!" in Indonesian.
All right so here we go!
“Non-smoking section”. (tempat dilarang merokok. tem-pat di-la-rang me-ro-kok. tempat dilarang merokok.)
“Smoking section.” (Tempat merokok. Tem-pat me-ro-kok. Tempat merokok. )
"May we sit there?" (Boleh duduk di sana? Bo-leh du-duk di sa-na? Boleh duduk di sana?)
