Chigusa: So Peter, first, I think listeners would want to know... Is it even possible to make learning a language easier…?
Peter: That’s a great question. So, when we say “make learning a language easier…” it really depends on what you’re doing now, right? Because you have to compare.
Chigusa: Right. You could be learning words by memorizing words out of a dictionary…
Peter: …or with flashcards, which is arguably a better way… maybe not easier, but better. And maybe you’re already learning the best way possible… So it’s possible that some advice that we’ll list may or may not apply to you.
Chigusa: Peter, what about you? What do you do to make it easier for yourself?
Peter: First… I set strict time limits. I’ll only spend 15 or 30 minutes on the language a day and then walk away.
Chigusa: But does it really make a language easier?
Peter: That’s a good point. It makes learning easier for me because… If I had to sit down for 2 hours, Chigusa, I don’t think I’d feel too excited to learn a language.
Chigusa: That’s true. So, it’s time management in a way.
Peter: Exactly. Plus there’s other things you need to do. And think about it. If you’re dreading doing something, it’s not going to sound fun or easy in your mind. But if it’s 10 or 15 minutes, it makes things easier, at least for me. Alright, what’s next on our list?
Chigusa: Ok, Number Two: Switch up your learning resource.
Peter: For example, you could learn with a textbook… or you can learn the same exact concepts with audio or video lessons. It’s really up to you. Some people prefer to read because they read faster than a video can explain things...
Chigusa: And some people prefer watching a video … or listening to audio over reading. Pick whichever medium is easiest for you.
Peter: With our lessons, you can listen to audio lessons, watch video lessons, or if you want… you can read the lesson notes. You can even combine them… listen to audio and read along so that you’re using multiple skills at once - listening and reading.
Chigusa: Number Three: Have a plan or a path to follow…
Peter: And what we mean by that is… there are a million different ways you can learn. A million paths you could take.
Chigusa: Yeah, there’s reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar… It kind of makes it hard to even start.
Peter: But, if you have a clear path to follow - on day 1, I’ll do lesson 1, on day 2, I’ll do lesson 2, and so on… it's a lot easier to know what to do and do it.
Chigusa: So, structure. What would you recommend here?
Peter: I think this comes down to your resource. Textbooks do that for you. With our system, you get a recommended pathway that gives you a clear path of lessons to take, so you don’t have to think about what to do next.
Chigusa: Alright, number four is… Multitask when you can.
Peter: And this is more so for people that want to start learning. Learning a language is hard when you’re not used to actually spending time learning…
Chigusa: Yes, but you can listen to an audio lesson while on a walk…
Peter: Or, while doing chores, and that makes it easier. This is something I call piggybacking - Where you add language learning on top of a routine so that you can multitask. And it’s something I do with our audio lessons.
Chigusa: Okay, Number five: Surround yourself with the language… or keep the language where you can see it. What about this one, Peter?
Peter: So, think about jogging, if someone wanted to get into jogging, the best way to start would be to take out your jogging shoes or buy jogging shoes and put them right where you can see them. That way, you can slip in and get going. Or at least, you know that you should do it.
Chigusa: So, it’s like you adjust your environment to make it easy to go for a jog.
Peter: Exactly. And if your running shoes were hidden in the closet, they’ll be out of sight, out of mind,
Chigusa: Yeah, and you’ll be less likely to do it.
Peter: With language, you can do something similar. For example, when I was learning Japanese kanji, I’d have a cheat sheet taped to my mirror. And I did the same thing when I was learning other languages - I’d tape the alphabet and words to my door where I could see them. Another thing you can do is… play our audio lessons in the background…
Chigusa: Ah, like you mentioned before with multitasking.
Peter: Precisely. Listeners, you can also print out our PDF cheat sheets and keep them as physical study material. I keep a few in my notebook and glance through when I want to review.
