POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: In the dialogue, Ria left a voicemail in Indonesian. Is voicemail popular in Indonesia, Fira?
Fira: Although voicemail has been widely and commonly used in developed countries for a long time, it’s not common for Indonesian people to use this feature.
Becky: Ah.. Right. It seems like usually when the line is busy or not responding, Indonesian people tend to call back again later or leave a text message, either by SMS or one of the free messaging services that have been becoming more popular lately.
Fira: For example, Indonesian people use free messaging services like Line, whatsapp, or kakaotalk.
Becky: Why is that?
Fira: It’s because not all mobile phones in Indonesia have a voicemail feature.
Becky: I’ve also heard that voicemail costs more, and that it takes a long time and is a bit complicated to leave a voicemail. Since the user is also charged phone credits while using voicemail, Indonesian people don’t think it’s efficient, is that true?
Fira: That’s right. You know it very well, Becky.
Becky: I do. Okay, onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word or phrase is..
Fira: menghubungi.
Becky: Meaning "to reach [someone],” or “to contact, to get in touch with."
Fira: This word consists of the prefix meng-, the root word hubung, which means something like "relationship," and the suffix -i, and it is used to indicate the action of contacting or getting in touch with someone.
Becky: This action can be done by e-mail, fax, phone, text message or by reaching out to the person face to face.
Fira: And listeners, please note that the object of this verb should be an animate thing.
Becky: Can you give us an example using this word?
Fira: Sure. Saya sudah menghubungi polisi.
Becky: That means "I already contacted the police.” By the way, when you're contacting someone by phone, you can also use another word right?
Fira: That’s right. You can use the word menelepon to mean "to contact." This can be only used when you're contacting someone over the phone.
Becky: Okay, next we have..
Fira: tinggalkan
Becky: Meaning "to leave” as in “to leave an item with someone."
Fira: The root word is tinggal and this verb means "to stay" or "to remain." The suffix -kan indicates that the verb is making or causing something to happen.
Becky: In the dialogue, this verb is used in this line.
Fira: Silahkan tinggalkan pesan.
Becky: "Please leave a message." Listeners, please note that you can only use this verb with an object. You can’t use this to say that you are leaving a place. Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn about phrases you can use when leaving a voice message or talking on the phone. Let’s check some useful phrases you can use when making a phone call in Indonesian.
Fira: First we have..Halo, bisa bicara dengan Ria?
Becky: "Hello, may I speak to Ria?"
Fira: When you make a phone call, you usually start with halo ("Hello"). Bisa is the auxiliary verb meaning "can" or "may."
Becky: Next we have the verb..
Fira: .. bicara meaning "to speak" or "to talk." Dengan is the preposition meaning "with," and finally you can say the name of the person that you are trying to reach, for example, Ria.
Becky: All together this literally means "Hello, can speak with Ria?"
Fira: Next we have.. Apakah ini kediaman pak Amir?
Becky: "Is this the residence of Mr. Amir?” Alternatively, you could say this phrase in more formal situations when talking on the phone.
Fira: Apakah is a pronoun meaning "what" or "is it." Ini is a pronoun meaning "this," kediaman is a noun meaning "residence" or "house," pak is short for bapak, meaning “Mr.”..
Becky: ..and it’s the way to respectfully address someone older. Finally you can say the name of the person that you are trying to reach, in this case Amir.
Fira: Okay, the next phrase is Maaf, salah sambung.
Becky: "Sorry, I think you have the wrong number." If you accidentally dial the wrong number when trying to make a phone call, you may hear this expression.
Fira: Maaf means "sorry," salah is an adjective meaning "wrong," "fault," or "incorrect," and sambung is a verb meaning "to connect."
Becky: All together, it literally means " Sorry, wrong connect."
Fira: The next one is.. Dia sedang pergi, mau tinggalkan pesan? meaning "He is away at the moment, do you want to leave a message?"
Becky: When the person you are trying to reach is not available, you may hear this expression.
Fira: Dia means "he" or "she," and sedang is a time signal meaning "at the moment."
Becky: Okay, what about the verbs?
Fira: Well, pergi is a verb meaning "to go" or "to go away." Next we have mau, meaning "to want," tinggalkan, meaning "to leave," and pesan, which is a noun meaning "message."
Becky: Literally, this means "He or She at the moment away, want leave message?"
Fira: Yes, The final expression is.. Saya akan menelepon kembali nanti.
Becky: "I will call back again later." When someone that you were trying to reach is away, but you want to call him or her again later instead of leaving a message, you can use this expression.
Fira: Saya means "I," akan means "will," menelepon is a verb meaning "to make a phone call,” and kembali is a verb meaning "to get back" or "again." Nanti is an adverb meaning "later."

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone. See you next time!
Fira: Sampai jumpa lagi!
