Halo semuanya, nama saya Fira. Hi everybody! I’m Fira.
Welcome to IndonesianPod101.com’s “Bahasa Indonesia dalam 3 menit”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Indonesian.
In our previous lessons, we learned how to ask someone about their possessions. In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to turn those into their negative forms in order to say "I'm not" and "I don't have."
So let's take an example. Imagine you are about to go to a restaurant with an Indonesian friend. You ask him whether he has ever been there, and he answers Saya tidak pernah.
Then, you ask him if he has a car to use to go to the restaurant and he says Saya tidak punya mobil.
Let’s look at these two negative sentences-
Saya tidak pernah.
Saya tidak punya mobil.
[slowly] Saya tidak pernah / Saya tidak punya mobil
Did you catch some similar words in these two sentences?
Right! In each sentence, you have the word, tidak. This is the special word used for negation in Indonesia.
So let's have a look at the way to switch from affirmative to negative.
If your friend has been to that restaurant before, he would say Saya pernah, which literally means “I have been.” But he actually said Saya tidak pernah.
So basically, you just have to put the word tidak in between the word Saya and before the adverb pernah.
The same thing applied to "I have a car" which is Saya punya mobil, and "I don't have a car" which is Saya tidak punya mobil.
So now, how would you say "I don't like this restaurant?" For reference, “I like this restaurant.” is Saya suka restoran ini. Put tidak after the word Saya and it becomes Saya tidak suka restoran ini.
[slowly] Saya tidak suka restoran ini.
Easy, don't you think? So now you can turn many sentences into negative form just by adding the word TIDAK.
Now it’s time for Fira’s Insights.
If you want to answer negatively but without being too direct, you can add the word terlalu after tidak. This will mean "I don't really...."
So if you want to say "I don't really like cars," it will be Saya tidak terlalu suka mobil.
Get ready for the next lesson because we are going to study a really important part of the Indonesian language: using adjectives.
I’ll be waiting for you in the next Bahasa Indonesia dalam 3 menit.
Sampai Jumpa!
