Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Indonesian Season 1, Lesson 20 - Talking about Your Likes. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer questions affirmatively in Indonesian.

Eric: Here's the formal way to ask “Do you like chocolate?” in Indonesian.
Fira: [Normal] Apakah kamu suka cokelat?
Eric: First is a word meaning “Is, are, do, does.”
Fira: [Normal] apakah [Slow] apakah
Eric: Next is the word meaning “you.”
Fira: [Normal] kamu [Slow] kamu
Eric: Next is the word meaning “to like.”
Fira: [Normal] suka [Slow] suka
Eric: Last is the word meaning “chocolate.”
Fira: [Normal] cokelat [Slow] cokelat
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning “Do you like chocolate?”

Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask “Do you like cake?”

Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Fira: In Indonesian, you can use suka to express that you like or love something in general. But when it comes to food, we specifically use the word doyan in addition to suka. For example, Saya doyan mie goreng, which means “I like fried noodles.”
