Jessi: Top 25 Indonesian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 1: What's your name in Indonesian? In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Indonesian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What's your name?" In Indonesian this is
Fira: Siapa nama anda?
The first word in the question โ€œWhat's your name?โ€ is
Fira: siapa
Jessi: "meaning who" in English. Listen to it syllable by syllable.
Fira: (Slow, by syllable) siapa
Jessi: Listen again at natural speed. Please repeat.
Fira: siapa
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the English translation, breaking it down by syllable, and then giving it once more at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question, What's your name? is
Fira: nama

Hi Ria,

Indonesians speak various dialects in Indonesia. The formal pronunciation of the word is siapa. You may hear it pronounced as siapa, or shiap, or syapa, but Indonesians will understand it siapa. I hope you find the various dialects of bahasa Indonesia interesting because for me, it is!

Sarah

Hiya Indonesian Pod!

Just curious about the word Siapa.

When it's said by itself it definitely sounds like an S but when in a sentence as more of an SH sound, just making sure I am hearing correctly ๐Ÿ˜
