Indonesian Survival Phrases Lesson 50. Allergies
In today’s lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will prove invaluable for those of you with allergies to something. Letting other people know about your allergies is vital to a fun and healthy trip. In today’s phrase we'll go over "I'm allergic to something." To start we'll need something that we're allergic to. In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous so let's start there.
In Indonesian "I am allergic to peanuts." is Saya alergi kacang. Let’s break it down by syllable Sa-ya a-ler-gi ka-cang. Now let’s hear it once again Saya alergi kacang. The first word saya means "I" or "me." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time sa-ya. saya. This is followed by alergi, which in Indonesian is "allergy." alergi. a-ler-gi. alergi. So to recap here, we have Saya alergi. Literally this means "I'm allergic." Let's take a look at the last word kacang which means "peanuts" or legumes in general. ka-cang. kacang. So altogether we have Saya alergi kacang. Literally this means "I'm allergic to peanuts."
Now let's go over some other common allergies. Let's try shrimp. In Indonesian "I am allergic to shrimp." is Saya alergi udang. Let’s break it down by syllable sa-ya a-ler-gi u-dang. Now let’s hear it once again. Saya alergi udang. Notice the only thing that changes here is the word for shrimp, udang; the rest is the same. That’s udang. u-dang. udang.
Here are some items you can put in place of "peanuts," kacang, and "shrimp," udang:
"Milk" is susu, su-su, susu
"Eggs" is telur, te-lur, telur
"Wheat," which is not that common in Indonesia, but just for the sake of completeness: terigu, te-ri-gu, terigu.
In Indonesian "I am having an allergic reaction." is Saya kena reaksi alergi. Let’s break it down by syllable Sa-ya ke-na re-ak-si a-ler-gi. Now let’s hear it once again, Saya kena reaksi alergi. The first word saya means "I" or "me," which we've already learned. Saya. This is followed by kena, which in Indonesian is "to be struck by." Kena. ke-na. kena. So let’s recap here, we have saya kena. Literally this means "I have been struck by." Let's take a look at the next word reaksi which means "reaction." Re-ak-si. reaksi. Finally we have alergi, which is our word for allergy. alergi.
So altogether we have Saya kena reaksi alergi. Literally this means "I am struck with an allergic reaction."
Allergies are just now beginning to have some sort of impact on Indonesian medicine and eating habits, espcially since being in a hot country, there are plenty of other factor that can cause gatal or rashes on the skin which have to be one of the most visible sign of allergic reaction. Still, many people around the country have little understanding about how serious an allergic reaction can be. So if you have an allergy, you may have to remind your hosts or the restaurant staff often that you can’t take some foods in any form with the expression you’ve just learned.
Okay to close out today’s lesson we’d like for you to practice what you’ve just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for saying the Indonesian phrase out loud or in Indonesian, dengan keras. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer so selamat sukses, that means "good luck!" in Indonesian.
All right so here we go!
“I’m allergic to peanuts.” (Saya alergi kacang. Sa-ya a-ler-gi ka-cang. Saya alergi kacang)
“I’m allergic to shrimps.” (Saya alergi udang. Sa-ya a-ler-gi u-dang. Saya alergi udang)
“I’m having an allergic reaction.”(Saya kena reaksi alergi. Sa-ya ke-na re-ak-si a-ler-gi. Saya kena reaksi alergi.)
Alright, that's going to do it for today!
