Indonesian Survival Phrases Lesson 33. Write it down please
Today we're going to cover a way for you to hold on to the information you get.
In Indonesian "Can you write this down please?" is Tolong tulis, ya? Let’s break it down by syllable. To-long tu-lis ya Now let’s hear it once again Tolong tulis ya. The first word tolong means "help" or "please do something for me." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time. To-long. Tolong. This is followed by tulis, which in Indonesian is "to write." Tulis. Tu-lis. Now let's look at the final word ya which means "yes" or "alright." I-ya, iya. So altogether we have Tolong tulis, ya? Literally this means "Please write it for me, alright?"
Once you have it written down, "Can you pronounce this please." is Tolong ucapkan, ya?. Let’ break it down by syllable to-long u-cap-kan ya. Now let’s hear it once again tolong ucapkan, ya? The first word tolong means "help" or "please do something for me" as we've mentioned before. Tolong. This is followed by ucapkan, which in Indonesian is "to pronounce." Ucapkan. u-cap-kan. ucapkan. Now let's look at the final word ya which means "yes" or "alright” as we’ve mentioned before. Ya. ya. So altogether we have Tolong ucapkan, ya?. Literally this means "Please pronounce this for me, alright?"
Remember that when you ask someone to write something down for you please hand everything with your right hand. And yet sometimes this poses a problem for people who are left handed, like myself. In my experience whenever I’ve had to write anything down in Indonesia, I accepted the pen and paper with my right hand, transferred the pen to my left hand, wrote something and then return the pen and paper with my right hand. Most Indonesian were bemuse that my ability to write with my left hand. I admit it’s rather difficult for many westerners to fully understand this. But it becomes natural overtime.
Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying the Indonesian phrase out loud or in Indonesian, dengan keras. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so selamat sukses, that means "good luck!" in Indonesian.
All right so here we go!
“Can you write it down please?” (Tolong tulis, ya? to-long tu-lis ya? tolong tulis, ya?)
“Can you pronounce it please?” (Tolong ucapkan ya? To-long u-cap-kan ya? Tolong ucapkan ya?)
Alright, that's going to do it for today!
