Halo semuanya, nama saya Fira! Hi everybody! I’m Fira.
Welcome to IndonesianPod101.com’s “Bahasa Indonesia dalam 3 menit”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Indonesian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb "to do" in Indonesian.
In this lesson, we will learn how to use suka, the most romantic Indonesian verb.
Suka can mean both "like" and "love" in Indonesian, so in this lesson we are going to see how to use it correctly. Let’s go! Yuk!
Imagine you are in a restaurant with your fiancé and he or she asks you Kamu suka keju, nggak?
This means "Do you like cheese?" in the informal form.
So let’s say you like it. You can say Iya, saya suka keju.
[slowly] Iya, saya suka keju.
So let’s break down this answer.
First we had-
Iya which is simply "Yes."
Then Saya which is "I" in Indonesian.
After that we have suka, which is “like”.
Finally we had Keju -- which is “cheese” in general.
So altogether it is Iya, saya suka keju.
Note that in Indonesian we use the verb suka to express both that we "love" or that we "just like" something or someone.
Even if you just appreciate something, you can use suka. On the other hand, it is also the verb to use when talking about something you really love or about the person you are in love with.
In fact, the verb suka has different levels of understanding, and this often depends on the word that comes before or after it. For example, if you add tidak terlalu before suka -- to say Saya tidak terlalu suka keju it will mean that you like cheese, but not so much.
To say that you really love or enjoy something, in the formal form, you can add the word sekali after suka as in Saya suka sekali filem ini which means "I really like this movie". Here it is stronger and means you like it very much.
And of course, suka is the most common version to use with the person you fell in love with - you can tell him Aku suka kamu. But the formal and famous way to say “I love you” in Indonesian is Aku cinta kamu. Cinta literally means “love”.
Now it’s time for Fira’s Insights.
In Indonesian, you can use suka to express that you like or love something in general. But when it comes to foods, besides suka, we specifically use the word doyan. For example, Saya doyan mie goreng. which means “I like fried noodles”.
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb suka depending on the degree of your love!
Next time we’ll learn another very useful verb, datang. Do you know what this Indonesian verb means? I’ll be waiting for you with the answer in the next Bahasa Indonesia dalam 3 menit. Sampai Jumpa lagi!
