Culture Class: Holidays in Indonesia, Lesson 19 - Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival

Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Indonesia Series at IndonesianPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Indonesian holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 19, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival. In Indonesian, it’s called Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival or JIJJF.

JIJJF is the biggest annual Indonesian jazz music festival, and has been held in Jakarta at the beginning of March by Java Festival Production since 2005.

In this lesson, we’ll talk about the performances you can see at this festival.

Although still young, this Festival is one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world and certainly the biggest in the southern hemisphere. From the first performance in 2005, this event has been designed to be a large-scale festival, presenting 125 music groups, or grup musik, and 1,045 musicians, or musisi, who give a total of 146 performances. This first festival attracted 47,500 spectators in just three days.

Leading musicians who performed in 2005 included the late king of blues James Brown; the Earth, Wind &Fire Experience; Eric Benet; Angie Stone; and a world-class local pianist named Bubi Chen. The performers at later events have been just as prestigious, and included Lee Ritenour, Sergio Mendes, Chaka Khan, Bob James, Bobby Caldwell, and more.

World-class local musicians help to enliven the performances, from the youngest talent to the most well known. JIJJF also offers music genres that deviate from jazz, helping to bridge the gaps in age and interest of the groups attending the festival.

The Museum Rekor Indonesia, MURI or Indonesian Museum of Record recognized this festival with a new world record. Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival broke the previous world record, or in Indonesian rekor dunia, as the largest jazz festival in the world by presenting 1,300 musicians, artists and music groups on twenty-one stages.
