POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Do Singapore and Indonesia have a good relationship, Fira?
Fira: Well the two countries are not only close on the map, they also have the same interests in doing business together.
Becky: They're both in Southeast Asia, right?
Fira: Exactly. Indonesia is a supplier of natural resources, and to export its products, most are sent through Singapore.
Becky: Also, Singapore has large investments in Indonesia. In fact, Indonesia is Singapore's sixth largest investment destination. So apart from economic reasons, how do the people from both countries interact?
Fira: Well, there is a one-hour time difference between Indonesia and Singapore. The flight only takes an hour and a half so it is easy to travel between countries.
Becky: There's also one advantage for citizens of Southeast Asian countries - no visa is needed for traveling within this region. So once they’re there, what do Singaporeans look forward to visiting in Indonesia, and vice versa?
Fira: Indonesia has a beautiful, natural landscape, which isn’t quite as available in Singapore. Indonesians enjoy staying in Singapore because it's neat and organized.
Becky: That’s interesting. Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Fira: Let’s start with pesan.
Becky: It's a noun that means "message" in English. It can be modified into different nouns.
Fira: For example, if we add the suffix -an, it becomes pesanan, meaning "order." Adding the particle pe-an, makes it pemesanan, meaning a "booking" or a "reservation."
Becky: I see. So it always becomes a noun no matter what particle is added to it. Can you give me an example sentence?
Fira: Perusahaan itu melayani pemesanan tiket pesawat ke Sorong.
Becky: "The company offers airline ticket bookings to Sorong." I see.
Fira: Now to the next word hargai, or "to appreciate."
Becky: It's a polite expression, right?
Fira: That’s right! This word is usually used to appreciate something, or to thank someone for a favor.
Becky: Give us an example sentence using the word hargai please.
Fira: No problem - let’s say you want to appreciate someones idea or opinion, you will say, Aku hargai pendapatmu.
Becky: "I appreciate your idea."
Fira: Exactly. The word can also be modified to mean "to appraise" or "to respect" as menghargai.
Becky: Ok, what’s the next word?
Fira: Tolong.
Becky: It's also a polite expression meaning "please." Let’s say you want to ask for help.
Fira: Most of the time, you'll say tolong bantu aku.
Becky: "Please help me"
Fira: That’s right. But we'll cover more about this polite expression in the grammar point.
Becky: So let’s move on to the grammar!
GRAMMAR POINT
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to form polite requests or orders using "please." Mr. Joko used some in the dialogue to give orders to his subordinate, Lisa.
Fira: This polite order form is usually used in an office or at any formal event.
Becky: From the dialogue, we can see that Mr. Joko is giving orders to prepare a meeting schedule. The following pattern gives you a brief outline for using polite orders.
Fira: Start with tolong, and follow with a verb. You might also notice that the verb may be in its root form, or it may have the suffix -an added.
Becky: Please give us an example of this polite request.
Fira: Suppose you want your subordinate to prepare a sales report. You'll say, Tolong siapkan laporan penjualan.
Becky: "Please prepare our sales report." Hmm, I think polite requests in Indonesian are simpler than in English.
Fira: I think so too! Let’s see the pattern here in a more humble expression. First is tolong bantu, then add the object and the verb. Tolong bantu dia menyaring datanya.
Becky: "Please help her to filter the data."
Fira: That's right.
Becky: How about we rehearse one more example to give us a better idea about the pronunciation.
Fira: Sure. You ask your secretary to draft a sales proposal. You can say Tolong konsepkan proposal penjualan.
Becky: "Please draft a sales proposal." Let’s break this down, “please” is …
Fira: … tolong
Becky: Next is the word “draft”
Fira: … konsepkan
Becky: And finally the word for “a sales proposal” is …
Fira: … proposal penjualan

Outro

Becky: Well listeners, that’s all for this lesson! Thank you very much for staying with us, we do hope you enjoyed our lesson! See you again!
Fira: Sampai jumpa lagi.
