Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Indonesian Season 1, Lesson 12 - Asking What Someone is Doing. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question “What are you doing?” in Indonesian.

Eric: Here's the informal way to ask “What are you doing?” in Indonesian.
Fira: [Normal] Kamu lagi ngapain?
Eric: First is a word meaning “you.”
Fira: [Normal] kamu [Slow] kamu
Eric: Next is the word meaning “at the moment, in the process of.”
Fira: [Normal] lagi [Slow] lagi
Eric: Last is the word meaning “do what.”
Fira: [Normal] ngapain [Slow] ngapain
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning “What are you doing?”
Fira: [Slow] Kamu lagi ngapain? [Normal] Kamu lagi ngapain?
Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the formal way to ask “What are you doing?”
Fira: [Normal] Apa yang sedang Anda lakukan?
Eric: First is a word meaning “what”
Fira: [Normal] apa [Slow] apa
Eric: Next is the word meaning “that.”
Fira: [Normal] yang [Slow] yang
Eric: Next is the word meaning “in the process of.”

Eric: Next is the word meaning “you.”

Eric: Last is the word meaning “to do.”

Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Fira: When you are using the word lagi, please be careful about its placement, because it could create a different meaning. For example, if you are reading at that moment, you say Saya lagi membaca, not Saya membaca lagi, because that means “I’m reading again.”
